Full moon at Ryan's Well, a stop for the night on the Stuart Highway
Chris and a telegraph pole.....
Never has a t-shirt been more appropriate...
View from Bruce 10 Aug., from red to green....
Met an extremely interesting (ugly) looking turkey at our camp at Banka Banka cattle station!
And an even more interesting emu!
We were told we had to stop at Daly Waters, so we did!
Yes, that really is a chook on his head....
A skippy contemplating the evening in Mataranka
A blue faced honeyeater popping out of the tree to say hello, in Mataranka
Feeling particularly fit one day we decided to paddle up the Katherine river
A resident bat at the camp site in Katherine Gorge
From Katherine we moved to Edith Falls, a stunning place.
Chris enjoying the wonderful water at Edith Falls
Big falls, little Hege....
After a tough swim out to the falls it was good fun to relax under the falls!
I know of at least 2 mothers who worry about their kids swimming in this part of the world..... No need to worry Mum - they have signs...
The road from Alice Springs to Darwin is about 1500kms.... along the way there really is very little other than wide open spaces and a few small towns (most were established as repeater stations for the Telegraph system). So we stop to sleep at these wee roadside stops areas....
On our return north we stopped again at the old historic Tennant Creek telegraph station. Here Chris inpects one of the poles.... the original wooden poles were replaced very soon after construction due to those pesky termites which perhas were not so keen to see communication lines strung across the land. These metal poles, called Oppenheimer Poles were shiped out to Australia especially for this project. By the completion of the project about 40,000 of these poles had been errected.
For our non-Swedish speaking friends - it reads 'Where will I sleep tonight?' In the desert by Henbury meteorite craters, not a lot happening....
as we heading north along the Stuart Highway
This turkey appeared to have a love-hate relationship with the Emu that you see elsewhere here....
An emu decided to stay in the camp after his flock left. Chris decided to train him, using crackers with spicy salami....
It was most entertaining, for the rest of the campsite as well!
This is where we filled up with fuel, pretty good, everything happened at the pub! (Payment for fuel, booking of campsite, booking of dinner, buying of clothes... and of course, drinking of beer)
The entertainer at the Daly Waters pub, together with the 15 year old chef he held quite the show!
These friendly guys came hopping around the camp in hope of a free feed.... I know we already have lot of pics of kangaroos, but we both thought this a paricularly good photo! This guy is almost posing.....
Beautiful, but a little annoying that we couldn't go ashore one many of the great sand banks along the river... they were areas for the crocodiles to lay their eggs! And we didn't want to disturb them....
Here is the view from the walk up the hill from the camp site, to go swimming in that pool down there!
We stayed here for about 4 hours, swimming an enjoying this beautiful rockpool.
This pohto taken about 2kms downstream from the rockpools and waterfalls, and perhaps 200 metres from our camp. Such a serene outlook - but in the wet season (another 4 months) this whole area wil be a torrent of flooding waters.
What we perhaps are not quite so sure of is just what it takes to disturb a crocodile?
