North Queensland region, Cairns to Cooktown and back down to Townsville  [Dateline 11 July - 25 July 2006]

Cairns was our base for a good week, as Bruce watched the camp while Hege picked up her friend Morten in Sydney, and Chris made a quick visit to Melbourne. When we all were back in the tropics we headed for Cooktown, as that is as far north we can go without a 4Wdrive.... A beautiful drive, even if the Wet Tropics decided to show us why it got its name!

After Cooktown we did a leisurely drive down the coast, trying to show Morten a tiny bit of big Australia. Our first stop was Port Douglas, where we visited the Wet Tropics Sanctuary, a great experience and highly recommended. Our next stop was Mission beach where we amongst other wildlife saw crocodiles and also heard cassiowaries, then on to 'our' waterhole where we almost killed a 3mtr long snake by running it over (not on purpose!!). To conclude Morten's tropical holiday we had three lovely days on Magnetic Island just outside of Townsville, a gorgeous spot where the wildlife experience continued, with the koalas, rock wallabies, lorikeets and possums all  being curious about the strange Norwegian bloke in a hat...
