Broome and surrounds
[Dateline 29 Aug - 22 Sep 2006]
From Derby we drove
on to the west coast and to Broome, where we now have been for just over two
wonderful and relaxing weeks. Chris and Bruce are both happy to get a break from
driving, and Hege is happy to have long lazy days in the sun. A bit of a holiday
in the holiday! Broome is a cute little town of about 14000 people, established
through the pearl trade of the early 1900's, now largely relying on tourism.
With turquoise water and near perfect weather we can certainly understand its
popularity! We have explored a little, done lots of swimming and walking,
generally enjoyed ourselves... yes, disgusting, we know.... Have a look at these
few photos, we will put some more up in a while, as we have Hege's cousin & co
arriving on the 18th of September we will do some more sightseeing then!

Cable Beach, a seagull and Chris. Not exactly crowded?
Smoke from a bushfire made the Cable Beach sunset more golden then usual
We finally managed to have a picnic on the beach at sunset here the other day...
The sunsets are really quite stunning...
Full moon over Roebuck Bay in Broome
The road we tried to drive was closed, big bushfire!
The beach at Barn Hill station
For some strange reason camels are a real 'symbol of Broome', you see them on everything in the souvenir shops, and the real things are constantly walking up and down the beach at the end of the day....
We had planned to drive up to Quandong point, ca 40km north of Broome but had to turn around, as the police said - the road was officially and physically closed!
140km south of Broome, stunning and remote, we saw a stingray playing in the waves, and a fisherman we talked to had caught a 1.9mtr long shark just the other day!
